Mercury and Triton step up hurricane assistance

Author: Staff
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (Sept. 2, 2005) - Mercury Marine and Triton Boats are rigging 10 boats and engines Friday for immediate use in the rescue efforts in and around New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The 40 hp FourStroke EFI engines were trucked overnight from Mercury's headquarters in Fond du Lac and arrived Friday morning at Triton's aluminum boat plant in Prairie, Miss. Technicians were standing by to rig the engines on 10 Triton 1648 SFB boats with the expectation that the units would be fully rigged, equipped with life jackets and other safety equipment, fueled and ready for service by noon local time. The boats are being put on trailers and picked up by officers from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency who have volunteered to tow the boats to the New Orleans area and aid in the rescue.
The boat and engine packages are being sent as a result of a request from the Louisiana governor's office on behalf of Louisiana Fish and Wildlife. The boats are durable aluminum models of shallow draft, making them ideally suited for use in the flooded areas of the state.
Earl Bentz, president of Triton Boats, said he's just happy to be able to offer help in the wake of such widespread devastation.
"It's a helpless feeling to be sitting here looking at all the suffering and wondering what we can do to assist these people," Bentz said. "We're certainly very proud of our relationship with Tennessee and all the wildlife agencies around the country and we were gratified to be able to contribute anyway we can."
Mercury Marine, the world's largest manufacturer of marine engines, has also made available 10 Mercury Inflatable boats for the rescue efforts, as well as five engines that are being rigged on Sea Pro boats.
Mercury Marine, Triton Boats and Sea Pro Boats are all owned by Brunswick Corporation.

Princecraft Vantage 22 SS

The year 2004 marks Princecraft's 50th year in boatbuilding. The Quebec-based company is the largest aluminum-boat maker in Canada, but its reputation is growing fast in the United States.
We look at the Vantage 22 SS as a perfect introduction to the Princecraft line. It's a model for price-conscious buyers, yet this latest version incorporates a few elite features normally found only on the plush Versailles models.
Foremost are the two large swivel seats up front, with extruded leg supports and high backs. It isn't the type of furniture we find on price-point boats. We also noticed that the upholstery in the love seats and port chaise is more plush this year, the result of an added layer of foam. On the forward deck of our test boat were halogen docking lights with chrome bezels, an option that grabbed some attention around the pier.
We like the seating arrangement of the 22 SS for its spacing and variety. Seven passengers could occupy their own pieces of furniture -- two forward chairs, two love seats, one chaise, the rear bench and the helm seat. Our boat also had an optional pump-out head behind the driver, but we might give that up in favor of a walkway to a transom swim ladder.
As for construction, Princecraft uses the same materials in the Vantage 22 SS that are found in its more expensive series of pontoon boats. The H36 aluminum does not carry a gauge number because it's an aircraft-grade metal. It's also unusual for a value-oriented pontoon to use 25-inch logs (23 inches is typical). The bigger diameter adds buoyancy and increases capacity in terms of people, weight and horsepower.
The high ride gave us a great view over our test lake. It didn't take long to find a top speed, as the 75-hp Mercury powered us to 20 mph in less than six seconds. That's a credit to the big tubes, as are the low noise levels. We found cruising at 3,800 rpm to our taste, partly because the decibels were under 70. For boaters on a budget, it's an appropriate speed for an appropriate boat.

Sanpan 2500 LE

Author: StaffGodfrey has been a leader and innovator in pontoon boats since 1958. It was the first to use aluminum construction and was the first builder to offer a lifetime warranty on its wood decking. The 2500 LE commemorates 40 years of milestones in the pontoon boat business.
Godfrey Marine introduced the first all-aluminum pontoon boat at the Chicago Boat Show in 1958. In the years that followed, other manufacturers began to follow Godfrey's lead by moving from steel to all-aluminum construction. To commemorate its 40th anniversary as an industry leader, Godfrey has introduced the Sanpan 2500LE, a veritable Cadillac among pontoon boats.
Beginning with its fully keeled, 25-inch diameter pontoons, the 2500 provides a stable ride, even when lake waters get a little rough. The larger diameter also adds to the 2500's capacity without significantly adding weight. For example, the same boat with 23-inch pontoons can carry 2,060 pounds. The 2500's weight capacity is 2,915 pounds but weighs only 37 pounds more.
"When you add the bigger tubes, you can get a lot more people on board," says John Deputy, project manager for Godfrey Marine.
Once on board, passengers will appreciate the wide, 8-foot-6-inch beam and the plush seating for which Sanpan has become known.
"A huge selling point for the Sanpan has been the comfort of the seating," he says. "For example, you can sit in 10 easy chairs, but only one manufacturer makes the one that fits your body better. That's what people say about our Sanpan."
The driver sits in an adjustable swivel bucket, but there's an option for a double-wide seat. Behind the driver a full L-shaped lounge wrapped in 30-ounce. marine-grade vinyl extends across the full width of the boat and forward to the 30-inch starboard entryway, which is wide enough for wheelchair users. Passengers in the rear are shielded from engine noise, thanks to the upholstered decking over the engine compartment.
Other standard features include a color-matched bimini top, a 34-quart cooler and deluxe rail graphics. The 2500 also is equipped with a sink and a built-in trash holder that could double as an extra cooler on the newly designed fiberglass helm station. The driver looks over full instrumentation, a stainless tilt steering wheel and an AM/FM cassette with weather-band and four speakers. Also noteworthy are the 20-year structural pontoon warranty and the lifetime guarantee on wood in the deck and furniture.
Some options include a ski tow bar, a changing room and outboard engines up to 150 hp. The Limited Edition also is available in a 22-foot length.

Starcraft Aurora 2210 I/O

Author: Pierce Hoover
Some boats are fun to run; others excel at rest. Starcraft's new 22-foot Aurora deck boat is equally impressive whether it's moving or sitting still.
Drop the throttle and you'll get plenty of eye-watering excitement. Our test boat, powered by a 5.7L Volvo, hit 47 mph with a standard aluminum prop. We suspect we could get a couple more mph out of the boat with a prop upgrade, but high 40s is plenty fast for a mid-size deck boat.
In addition to a strong top end, the Aurora cornered well, delivered plenty of out-of-the-hole performance and held speed in the often-difficult towing range of 18 to 20 mph. You could upgrade to a DuoProp drive for even more pulling power and low-speed planing control if wakeboarding will be a frequent activity, but we thought the boat towed -- and ran -- just fine for everyday applications.
The 2210 proved to be as accommodating at rest as it was thrilling at speed. The open floor plan allows for a wide walk-through and a generous bow lounge with an integrated cooler and stow-away pedestal table. Of particular note is the extra-large in-deck storage locker, which includes an optional "kiddie pool" section that can be flooded to provide youngsters with a shallow splash basin for cooling off.
A wide boarding step and a hide-away boarding ladder facilitate beach parties; the extended dash console opens to reveal a changing room that can also hold a portable toilet. The main cockpit features a wraparound lounge and removable ice chest, but it is the stern section that may become the boat's primary focal point while at anchor.
Just ahead of the broad swim platform, Starcraft has built a wide bench seat into the transom, complete with molded drink holders and hide-away lockers for trash cans, fenders and accessories. Controls for the eight-speaker stereo system grace the rear-facing swim deck, as does a pair of built-in speakers.
The addition of this deck adds yet another dimension to the 2210, making it an ideal boat for everything from joy riding to wakeboarding to simply drifting in a quiet cove.

Yamaha/F100TXRX

Because four-stroke technology is relatively new to the mainstream outboard market, some folks are leery about buying them. A big fear is that four-strokes are heavier and make less power than comparable two-strokes. Yamaha took this into consideration when creating its new F100TXRX.
With its weight-saving block, cylinder head and valve-train design, Yamaha engineers created the engine specifically for marine applications. The F100TXRX tips the scales at 369 pounds, which is 63 pounds lighter than Yamaha's own 150- and 200-horse OX66 two-stroke models.
To further reduce weight, Yamaha engineers used lighter materials where possible. For example, the tuned intake manifold is made of a composite plastic rather than cast aluminum, which saves about 5 pounds. But this new four-stroke doesn't compromise performance for decreased weight.
Yamaha's Dan Ostrosky conducted performance tests on Minnesota's Fox River in October. Bolted to the transom of a 3,100-pound boat, the F100TXRX propelled the craft to speeds of 45 mph - not bad considering the power-to-weight ratio.
"This engine can be used on bay boats and on down to walleye boats. It runs very well," Ostrosky says. "We're targeting the large aluminum-boat market."
As an added convenience, the 100 comes with an automatic-choke feature for quick starts in all weather conditions. Once running, a thermostat controls water temperature for consistent performance. Sensors monitor and protect the engine from low oil levels, overheating and blocked coolant passages. If debris or another foreign object blocks a water intake, sensors trigger an alarm to alert the operator and automatically reduce engine speed to 2,000 rpm. This lets a boater cruise to shore without harming the engine
